Abstract

A 1-week diet was administered to subjects with type 1 diabetes to clarify the relationship of total energy intake, the % intake of three major nutrients-lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins-insulin dosage, body weight, and hemoglobin (Hb)A1c level. Subjects numbered 120 and were between 20 and 49 years old. Their mean HbA1c was 6.9±0.8 %. No correlation was seen between total energy intake and HbA1c level. Subjects with a higher % lipid intake had a higher HbA1c level, and those with lower % carbohydrate intake had a higher HbA1c level. Data were subjected to stepwise multiple-regression analysis using the HbA1c level as a dependent variable and body mass index (BMI), insulin injection dosage, and % intake of the three major nutrients as independent variables. Results showed that HbA1c level correlated positively with insulin injection dosage (β=0.329, p<0.01) and negatively with % carbohydrate intake (β=-0.234, p<0.01). Better glycemic control may thus be achieved by diet therapy focusing on % intake of the three major nutrients, especially lipids and carbohydrates.<br>
