Abstract

Exclusive use of the pyrethroid cypermethrin to control German cockroaches in urban apartments resulted in control failure resistance after limited exposure. From 1986 to 1990 cypermethrin was applied twice yearly to kitchens and bathrooms for German cockroach control in 1,500 apartments in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1988 application of cypermethrin resulted in only a 70% reduction of cockroach infestations, a 20% reduction was recorded in 1989,and 21% in 1990. Control failure is attributed to high-level resistance to cypermethrin. An LD_<50> resistance ratio of 180,and a KT_<50> ratio of 2.9 was recorded from the German cockroaches exposed to cypermethrin with this treatment scheme.
