Abstract

A twelve-month study was initiated to determine the presence and species composition of mosquitoes breeding in the septic tanks in the University of Mosul, north of Iraq (latitude 36°N) during the period of June 1988-June 1989. Based on the identification of male genitalia and ratio of female autogeny, this study revealed that Culex quinquefasciatus Say and Culex pipiens molestus Forskal breed together in the same septic tanks. In the fall and winter months (October-January), larvae and pupae of Cx. p. molestus were more abundant than those of Cx. quinquefasciatus. The presence of Cx. quinquefasciatus in Mosul (northern Iraq) is the first record.
