Description

The drop-off rhythms of engorged Ixodes persulcatus larvae and nymphs were observed in a 14L-10D photoperiod, in constant darkness and light from the 3rd day after infestation, and in constant darkness and light after infestation. The engorged larvae and nymphs exhibited a diurnal drop-off rhythm in a 14L-10D photoperiod. This rhythm was maintained in constant darkness and light from the 3rd day after infestation, and in constant darkness after infestation. Therefore, the detachment of engorged larvae and nymphs appears to be controlled by an endogenous circadian mechanism of regulation which is entrained by the photoperiod. The drop-off of the engorged larvae, however, showed an unclear rhythm in constant light after infestation. This suggests that the diurnal drop-off rhythm is strongly disturbed in constant light after infestation. In both engorged larvae and nymphs, the dropping time was delayed in constant darkness from the 3rd day after infestation and in constant darkness after infestation. This may be due to the lack of the stimulus of light in constant darkness.
