Resistance level to warfarin was evaluated among 11 colonies of brown rats, Rattus norvegicus, collected in Tokyo (Shinjuku and Hino), Kanagawa (Sagamihara, Yokohama and Kawasaki), Chiba (Chiba and Funabashi), Ibaraki (Kashima), Aichi (Nagoya), Osaka (Osaka) and No. 2-Kaiho (the 2nd fortress islet) on Tokyo Bay, and three strains of laboratory rats (Wistar, SD and F344). Flour-type baits containing 0.005% (w/w) warfarin were given to them for six days. The average lethal days and dose (a. i.) in brown rats were 7.0 days and 20.0mg/kg in the Shinjuku colony; 7.3 days and 9.5mg/kg in the Hino colony; 6.1 days and 13.5mg/kg in the Sagamihara colony; 8.6 days and 17.5mg/kg in the Yokohama colony; 4.0 days and 12.5mg/kg in the Kawasaki colony; 6.4 days and 13.0mg/kg in the Chiba colony; 6.8 days and 11.5mg/kg in the Funabashi colony; 6.3 days and 19.5mg/kg in the Kashima colony; 6.4 days and 11.5mg/kg in the Nagoya colony; 6.1 days and 12.0mg/kg in the Osaka colony; 5.6 days and 16.5mg/kg in the No. 2-Kaiho colony, with the average of 6.4 days and 13.0mg/kg, respectively. With regard to the laboratory rats, the average lethal days and dose were 6.3 days and 14.0mg/kg in the Wistar strain; 6.3 days and 17.5mg/kg in the SD strain; 6.1 days and 17.5mg/kg in the F344 strain, respectively. One rat survived the complete experimental period of 1 month in the Funabashi, Nagoya and No.2-Kaiho Island colonies. If the lethal day was used for the determination of resistance according to the recommended WHO guidelines, these colonies were judged as resistant to warfarin. However, the mortality rate of the rat populations within 12 days indicated no resistance to warfarin in these colonies. As a result of the present survey, it is suggested that use of 12 days as the lethal day be newly proposed for the determination of resistance to warfarin.
