Observations were made on bionomics of the horsefly Tabanus iyoensis SHIRAKI, during the summers of 1969 and 1970 at Nakanokochi, Toyama. Three dry-ice traps were used for the collection, and approximately 250,000 horseflies were collected and examined. They belonged to 10 species, of which 98% were T. iyoensis. The biting activity of the females of this species were seen during the season from the end of July to the middle of August. The activity peak in 1970 occurred about one week earlier than in 1969,probably due to warmer climate in June. The population density and the life span of the horseflies were estimated by utilizing the LINCOLN Index and JOLLY's stochastic methods from the recapture rate of artificially marked specimens. The survival rate of the horsefly for one day was estimated to be approximately 64%, and no seasonal variation was observed. Hence, the accumulative population of females in one season of this area was estimated to be about 2.2×(10)^6. The habitat of the female horseflies was mostly restricted to areas along the streams, and the population density in such area was estimated to be 1.7 per square metre at the peak in the middle of August, with the accumulative density of 7 per square metre per year. However, the breeding places of the larvae were apparently distributed to much wider areas, and there were relatively few larvae actually discovered in areas along the streams.
