Abstract
A patient who had severe memory disorder as a sequela of herpes encephalitis was given a job coaching by medical staffs. The patient was a 47-year old local public servant. Starting from the fifteenth month after the onset, the medical staff visited the office where the patient worked, 14 times in the following 8 months to give the patient occupational training (job coaching). The staff tried to improve patient's insight by instantly pointing out an error, made by the patient, if any, and strengthening the memory trace. At the same time, a flow chart of the job contents was prepared to provide the patients with supplementary visual stimuli, and knack for taking notes, such as frequent use of abbreviations, no omission of auxiliary words and conjunctions, in meetings and receiving telephone calls was instructed by the staffs. Colleagues of this patient were also given an instruction how to approach and work him in relation to the memory disorder symptoms, so that natural support was provided for the patient. As a result, the patient was rehabilitated to maintain the former position, chief of accounting & clerical section, even though, some amnesia remained.
