Performance of a PTFE (Poly-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethlene) coated ball-bearing for a totally implantable artificial heart has been studied on endurance test systems under constant loads and also pulsatile loads. Vibration signals from the PTFE coated bearing were analyzed with the power spectrum analysis. The PTFE coated ball-bearing has been working in a saturated water vapor environment for over 507 days without any sign of deterioration under the same equivalent drive and load conditions as for the ball-bearing in our motor-driven assist pump. The amplitudes of the vibration signals in low frequencies(-100Hz) were bigger under the pulsatile load than the equvalent constant load. The Amplitudes of vibration in middle range frequency(-1.5kHz) increased with the increase of the pulsatile load. The Amplitudes of the vibration signals increased with increase of the pulsatile load. The amplitudes of the vibration signals increased with the increase of the motor velocity. In conclusion, long-term durability of the PTFE coated ball-bearing is excellent, and power spectrum analysis of the vibration signals are useful for diagnosing bearing conditions.
