Abstract

We evaluated the perfluorochemical Fluosol-DA, 20%, as a blood substitute for the hemorrhagic shock patients. Nine patients received 900 to 1500ml of FDA and had no adverse effects. Hemodynamic monitoring was performed in 5 patients using SWAN-GANZ catheter and the results were as follows; 1) B. P. and H. R. improved to normal range after administration of FDA. 2) Hemodynamics were not always stable and some showed a hyperdynamic pattern, and some showed a hypohydration pattern. 3) All patients improved to normal hemodynamics after blood transfusion. From these data it was suggested that the careful hemodynamic monitoring was necessary and immediate blood transfusion was needed if available.
