Description

Pollen counts were carried out at the Sagamihara National Hospital in the vicinity of Tokyo, from January, 1958 until December, 1959, using gravity slide method. The results obtained, as illustrated in the figure, show that the number of airborne-pollens is greatest in spring and autumn, comparatively small in summer, and least in winter. In the course of this pollen survey it was found that pollenating periods of short ragweed and orchard grass ranged respectively from August to September and from May to June. Then the followings on pollinosis of short ragweed and orchard grass were confirmed. 1) By inhalation of ragweed pollens beside a ragweed colony in the open field during the pollenating period, eleven of 22 allergic patients showed symptoms of pollinosis. The same symptoms were shown in two of 18 patients concerning orchard grass. Those patients who showed the same but slight symptoms as controls were excluded. 2) Those patients whose intradermal reactions with these pollen extracts provide positive increased in number of attacks of bronchial asthma after each pollenating period. 3) The severer the above symptoms of pollinosis were, the stronger the intradermal reactions appeared.
