Abstract

As one of the mechanisms regarding bronchial hypersensitivity observed in bronchial asthma, there has been β-adrenergic blockade theory and there are many reports about the β-adrenergic response to adrenaline, such as hyperglycemia in bronchial asthmatic subjects. But no uniform results were given in these reports. Recently, there has been a report that β_2 stimulants increase serum insulin level, but not affect plasma glucose level. Studies were performed to clarify the effect of intravenous glucose or β_2 stimulant (trimetoquinol) upon serum insulin level and plasma glucose level in bronchial asthmatic, diabetic and normal subjects. The results were given as follows: 1. β_2 stimulant slightly increased plasma glucose level and there was not found the differences among bronchial asthmatic, diabetic and normal subjects. 2. An increase of serum insulin level responded to β_2 stimulant in bronchial asthmatic subjects smaller thsan that in diabetic or normal subjects. A good correlation was observed between the insulin level and the severity of asthmatic attack. 3. It may be valuable method to examine the changes of serum insulin level induced by β_2 stimulant for evaluating the degree of β-blockade in bronchial asthma. This study suggests that the blockade of β-adrenergic receptor might exist in pancreatic β cells of bronchial asthmatic subjects.
