Description

The effect of disodium cromoglycate (Intal) on the asthmatic attacks due to occupational antigens was evaluated clinically on 80 patients of occupational asthma. The number of cases as well as causative antigens were as follows;49 cases of western red cedar sawdust in woodmill factories, 23 cases of sprayed aerosol (crushed protein substance of sea squirt) in the taking off process of oyster from its shell, 6 cases of starch powder of devil's tongue root and other 2 cases. This drug was medicated orally 4 times daily through inhalating apparatus (spinhaler) throughout the period of more than two months. Efficacy rate of the drug (preventive effect on asthmatic attacks) was significantly higher (80%) in the patients of occupational asthma than the rate (60%) in the asthmatic patients in the university-hospitals, which we previously reported. The effect became more clear when data were investigated in comparison of two types (atopic and mixed) of asthmatic clinical feature, being the efficacy rate higher in atopic type than in mixed type. There was slight difference in efficacy between two antigens, western red cedar sawdust and sea squirt aerosol, i.e.the efficacy was more clear in the former than in the latter. Disodium cromoglycate was thus more effective for asthmatic patients mainly due to occupational antigens.
