Description

Attempts were made to demonstrate whether there was a serum suppressive effect in patients with a variety of respiratory diseases or not, using as a index the inhibition of induction of the plaqueforming cell in the spleen od mice immunized with sheep red blood cells. Studies were also made to determine if there were any associations between the suppressive effect and clinical findings of these same cares studied through this paper. 1. Serum suppressive effect was detected in 4 of 9 healthy individuals over 70 years old, but there was no evidence of this effect in 35 healthy individuals ranging in age 10 to 69 years old. 2. Serum suppressive effect was demonstrated in 19 of 19 patiens with pulmonary cancer;in 13 of 13 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and in 2 of 8 cured patients;in 18 of 20 patients with active sarcoidosis and in 4 of 6 cured patients;in 5 of 5 patients with chronic berylliosis;but not in any of 3 patients with bronchoectasis and 3 patients with bronchitis. 3. The frequency of case showing the serum suppressive effect appeared significantly higher in active pulmonary tuberculosis, when compared to those cured, but not in pulmonary cancer and sarcoidsis. 4. It was shown that the serum suppressive effect was not based on heterophile antibody to sheep red blood cell.
