The differences of distributions by sex, age, occupation, causes of death, etc., were analysed in tuberculosis patients according to the place of death in this paper. The results were analysed by X2 test.
The subjects of this investigation include not only 575 cases who died during registration at Tanashi Health Center in Tokyo as active or inactive tuberculosis, but also 202 cases who died of tuberculosis in the area covered by this Health Center without registration. All the cases who died between January 1, 1962 and December 31, 1972 were submitted to this study.
Out of 777 cases, 127 cases or 16.3% died in national sanatoria, 376 cases or 48.4% died in the other sanatoria, 165 cases or 21.2% died in hospitals, 102 cases or 13.1% died at home and 7 cases or 0.9% died at the other places by accident as shown in Table 2.
In cases died at home, there were relatively many aged and married cases than those died in the hospitals and sanatoria. By occupation, there were many merchants, artisans and farmers than expected. About 40% of cases died at home were of non-tuberculous diseases or conditions, especially of senility. As the direct cause of tuberculous death, asphyxia was higher than expected in cases who died at home.
In cases died in hospitals, there were many females, private employees and house-workers than expected. Out of 165 cases died in hospitals, 60 cases or 36.4% died of non-tuberculous diseases, mainly by malignant tumor. As a direct cause of tuberculous death, there were more death due to pneumothorax than expected.
Out of 376 cases who died in the private or national sanatoria, 149 cases or 39.6% were aged patients more than 60 years old. There were many temporatry workers and less females than expected. There is no difference in the causes of death between cases died in national sanatoria and those died in the other sanatoria.
Seventy eight out of 127 cases who died in the national sanatoria were unmarried. Only 11.8% had died of non-tuberculous diseases. The main direct causes of pulmonary tuberculosis death were cor pulmonale and general weakness. The average duration from detection of diseases to death was 14.5 years in the tuberculous death cases who died in the national sanatoria. The average duration was the longest in cases died in national sanatoria, followed by cases died in other sanatoria and in hospitals, and it was the shortest in cases died at home.
