Abstract

Although various risk factors for dental caries are known, few studies have examined whether self-efficacy correlates with dental caries. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-efficacy for dietary habits and the experience of dental caries in Okayama University first-year students.
The subjects were 2,031 first-year students (1,159 males, 872 females) aged 18 and 19 years. Students completed a questionnaire including items related to sex, dietary habits, the use of fluoride-containing dentifrice, experience of topical application of fluoride, and self-efficacy for dietary habits. The number of present teeth and Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth index (DMFT) were examined. The subjects were divided into two groups by the number of DMFT (DMFT=0, DMFT>0), and the differences in these factors were compared between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis was performed with the presence of DMF teeth as a dependent variable.
The results of logistic regression analysis showed that sex (OR 1.325, 95%CI 1.099-1.596, p=0.003), experience of topical application of fluoride (OR 0.765, 95%CI 0.634-0.924, p=0.005), self-efficacy for dietary habits (OR 0.813, 95%CI 0.672-0.982, p=0.032), and an irregular diet (OR 1.250, 95%CI 1.005-1.554, p=0.045) were significantly associated with the presence of DMFT.
In conclusion, self-efficacy for dietary habits correlated with DMFT.
