The present study was made to examine the effects of fluoride mouth-rinsing solutions on the enamel by chemical analysis. Experiments were made in vitro of fluoride mouthrinsing and fluoride topical application, with the powdered enamel as material, and the findings were compared. Phosphoric acid-acidified NaF solution (500 ppm of F-; pH 5.0) was used as the fluoride mouth rinse, and compared with the acidulated phosphate fluoride solution (F: 0.9%; pH 3.6) for topical application.
The uptake of fluoride by the enamel was determined by Wharton's microdiffusion method and the Zr-SPADNS method. On the daily collected distilled water in which the powder was immersed as a sample, the calcium content was determined by Yanagisawa's method, using plasmocorinth B, the fluorine content by an ORION ion meter (model 801) and fluoride ion electrodes; and the phosphorous content by Dryer's method.
In the experiments of fluoride mouth-rinsing, the fluorine content of the enamel powder was about 2000ppm in the first rinsing experiment, and it proved to increase with time. The fluoride in the enamel powder remained and caused the enamel solubility to decrease. In the experiments of topical application, a large amount of CaF2 was formed, which was washed out in distilled water.
