Abstract

A case of acute severe hearing loss caused by the ingestion of sodium bromate in an 18-year-old female was reported.
Hearing loss was associated with the profound renal failure which developed to anuria.
There were not disturbances of the vestibular function in this patient.
Electrocochleogram revealed the acute total subtractive loss type of sensory units.
It seems that simultaneous occurrences of both severe subtractive hearing loss and acute renal damage in sodium bromate poisoning may be based on similarities in the pathophysio-logical changes between the stria vascularis of the cochlea and, the proximal renal tubules of the glomerulus.
