Abstract
The no-smoking movement has been promoted in public spaces in Japan and the areas for smoking have been designated recently in consideration of damage to nonsmokers by the smoke produced by smokers.<br>Various types of cancer, respiratory and circulatory diseases, as well as brain infarction are known to be related to smoking. Among those, the relationship between cancer and smoking has been studied in both the etiological and experimental fields. Lung cancer is one of the best-known cancers relating to smoking.<br>Smoking is also known to cause various gastrointestinal diseases including esophageal cancer. The risk factors known for esophageal cancer are senior male, alcohol and cigarette consumption. The latter two are known to accelerate the risk. Cigarette smoke includes various carcinogens and is known to damage the esophageal mucosa when dissolved in alcohol. Regarding alcohol, cell toxicity by acetoaldehyde produce in the liver and the genetic variety of its metabolizing enzymes have been studied as carcinogenic mechanisms.
