Abstract

In this paper, disease distribution and phonatory functions of juvenile cases (≦15 years old) visiting the voice clinic of the Department of Otolaryngology, Niigata University Hospital, were discussed. Vocal cord nodule was the most common juvenile voice disorder (62%), dysphonia without organic lesion in the larynx (non-organic dysphonia) was second-most common (22%), followed by polypoid degeneration (4%), laryngitis (4%), vocal cord palsy (3%), normal (3%), and vocal cord polyp (2%). The mean age of patients with vocal cord nodule was 8.2 years, and male patients were dominant (3.5 times the number of female patients), since most of the vocal cord nodule cases were low-age males. The mean age of the non-organic dysphonia patients was 11.4 years, and male patients were dominant (3 times the number of female patients). The mean age of the male patients with non-organic dysphonia was higher than that of the female patients since voice mutation disorder was the common pathology. For the evaluation of glottal closure insufficiency of juvenile vocal cord nodule cases, both mean flow rate and maximum phonation time were considered important. Since maximum sound pressure level of the voice of juvenile vocal cord cases was louder than adult cases, influence of vocal abuse in the juvenile cases was considered. Difference of F0 between male and female was smaller in the juvenile vocal cord nodule cases, that reflects a character of juvenile voice.
