Abstract

Esophageal cancer is mainly treated with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Although significant improvement is achieved with multimodality therapy, the cure rate remains unsatisfying. The 3-year overall survival of locally advanced unresectable (LAUR) esophageal cancer patients treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is around 25%. In order to improve the survival rate of LAUR esophageal cancer, it is necessary not only to increase treatment intensity but also to decrease long-term toxicity. In the field of chemotherapy, new cytotoxic drugs and molecular target drugs are coming into use, and in the field of radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy and particle radiotherapy are being incorporated.
