Abstract

We studied the clinical features of double cancer in 360 hypopharyngeal cancer patients who were treated in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Kurume University Hospital between 1989 and 2011. There were 88 double cancer patients (67 synchronous cases, 21 metachronous cases), and the occurrence rate was 24% for hypopharyngeal cancer. The five-year survival rate of hypopharyngeal cancer with esophageal cancer was 37%. (Synchronous and metachronous double cancer rates were 30% and 50%, respectively). The survival rate for advanced hypopharyngeal and esophageal cancer was 24%. The incidence of esophageal double cancer was 24%, and high incidences of esophageal double cancer were seen with synchronous and advanced hypopharyngeal cancer. From our investigation it became evident that the prognosis of synchronous and advanced esophageal double cancer is poor.
