Abstract

We report three cases of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma believed to be due to anaplastic transformation after cervical lymph node metastasis. Case 1 was a female who had an anaplastic transformation at the superior neck lymph node and received a complete resection. After surgery, she has lived for over 2 years. Case 2 was a female who had a tumor similar to that of case 1, but as her tumor invaded the internal jugular vein and created a tumor embolism, it was unresectable. Case 3 was also an unresectable anaplastic carcinoma in the lateral neck because of direct common carotid artery invasion. She died during postoperative radiotherapy for the rapidly increased tumor. We must recognize that anaplastic thyroid carcinoma shows an extremely poor prognosis and needs prompt diagnosis and therapy.
