Description
The role of Kampo medicine in the treatment of bronchial asthma is still important today. Contemporary indications of Kampo medicine are cases that suffer side effects from inhaled steroids or receive only slight benefit from them. Patients with mental illness and patients with increased susceptibility to infection are also good indications of Kampo medicine. Neverthless, as the evidence about selecting adequate Kampo prescriptions to treat these patients is poor, study of traditional medicine is still useful. We usually administer Kampo prescriptions including the herb ephedra for patients during asthmatic attacks and prescriptions including bupleurum root to prevent such attacks. Makyokansekito is a basic prescription for treating patients during attacks and it should be used when the patient is sweating without dehydration. Modern medicinal treatment should be performed for dehydrated asthmatic patients. Prescriptions including bupleurum root have not only anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory action, but also sedative action. Prescriptions including bupleurum root and hangekobokuto can be used to treat depression and anxiety, which might be the trigger of an attack or complication of asthma. Prescriptions for compensating qi are used for treating patients with weight loss or disorder of respiratory function. Some younger doctors's misunderstanding about the usage of bakumondoto resulting from recent pharmacological studies might suggest that coordinated learning of both western medicine and Kampo medicine should be performed.
