Surgical treatment for advanced laryngeal cancer involves laryngectomy, and thus initial total loss of voice. Total loss of voice results in major changes in communication and negatively affects quality of life. Several methods to restore voice in laryngectomees have been developed, including tracheo-esophageal voice with prosthesis. While this is widely regarded as a good method, little is known about vocal quality and function of a prosthetic voice.<br>Ten laryngectomees were able to phonate with Groningen voice button as of March 2011. The data regarding these ten patients is the basis of this study. Voice quality was assessed by perceptual voice analysis using speech articulation, and vocal function was assessed by acoustic measures (maximum phonation time and fundamental frequency) and spectrum analysis (pitch perturbation quotient (PPQ) and amplitude perturbation quotient (APQ)). Each patient also completed VHI-10 to evaluate the correlation between VHI-10 scores and performance in laboratory voice measurements.<br>The vocal quality of the prosthetic voice was fair to excellent. Patients with better vocal quality tended to have better vocal function. The VHI-10 scores and the vocal laboratory measurements did not show significant correlation. A great number of laryngectomees succeeded in prosthetic phonation without any complicated training, which suggests that prosthetic voice can be a useful method to support both patients and carers.
