Description

The prophylactic effect of orally administered elastase complex on cholesterol-induced experimental atheromatosis in rabbits was studied during the 21-week period. The concentration of cholesterol in the serum was significantly depressed by the administration of elastase complex. The contents of cholesterol, both free and total, were also reduced in the thoracic aorta.
In the liver, however, the contents of cholesterol were not affected. The degree of atheromatosis of the coronary arteries was not affected.
The conclusion may be drawn that the effect of elastase-complex to atheromatosis is due to its lipolytic activity.
