To study the mechanisms involved in the development of anemia in gastric cancer cases, hematological examinations were carried through in 200 cases of gastric cancer. The male to female ratio in these cases was 1.6 to 1.0, male patients occupying approximately 75% of all patients subjected to the study. Average age of this group was 55 years old, and 128 cases, namely 64%, were between 50 to 69. The hemoglobin content, red cell corpuscle count, and packed cell volume decreased along the course of the basic disease and anemia appeared in 62.5% of 200 cases, which average color index for 137 cases was 0.97, distributing in 37.2% of normochromic, 42.5% of hypochromic and 20.4% of hyperchromic anemia. The average white cell count in 200 cases was 5900. Leucopenia, normoleucocytosis and leucocytosis occured in 41.0%, 51.0% and 8.0% respectively. The differential white cell counts in far advanced cases revealed that the neutrophilia, shift to the left, eosinopenia and lymphopenia, although basophilic leucocyte and monocyte did not show any significant changes. Two advanced cases showed concomitant leucopenia, anemia and thrombocytopenia. Overt hemorrhagic diathesis with thrombocytopenia was found in three advanced stomach cancer cases.
