Abstract

A 80 year-old man was diagnosed as having gastric cancer by an upper G. I. series. During the course of the therapy with blood transfusion and predonisolone, acute pneumonia developed. A gram stain on direct smears from the sputum revealed numerous gram -negative diplococci in the polymorphonuclear cells and culture of the specimen yielded abundant colonies of Brahna-mella catarrhalis.<BR>Carbenicillin and cephalothin were effective against that pneumonia, but soon after slight improvement, E. coli pneumonia developed and the patient died<BR>Neeled biopsy specimen of the lung revealed the histological picutre of bonchopneumonia
