Abstract
An analysis is presented on the performance of Viterbi decoding for NRZL recording code where noise samples at decoder input are correlated.
Bit error probabilities are obtained for three detection methods : amplitude detection, integrated detection and partial response detection, and a comparison of performance for these detection methods is made in terms of the linear density and required SNR at reading point for a given error probability. The performance of Viterbi decoding is also compared with that of bit-by-bit decoding.
The results show that in high-density recording the partial response detection method with Viterbi decoding gives the best performance among these detection methods with Viterbi or bit-by-bit decoding.
