A 40-inch liquid-crystal (LCD) rear-projection stereoscopic color TV display that requires no special glasses is described. The resulting 3-D TV image was of high resolution, exceptionally bright, and vividly three-dimensional. The key technologies that support this 3-D TV display are a three-dimensional image-projection method, a high-resolution (345, 600×3 pixels) LCD video projector, and a new type of lenticular screen. Images from left- and right-hand TV cameras are multiplexed, pixel by pixel, to form a vertical stripe image and projected by a single LCD color video projector from behind the lenticular screen. Using this image-projection method, optical alignment between the vertical stripe image and the lenticular screen is both accurate and easily attained. A specially designed lenticular screen with a “hollow structure” reduces total screen weight and thickness, and increases light transmittance. This 3-D TV display has widespread application in a broad range of fields, inculding home 3-D TV, amusement, medicine, education, and various industrial sectors.
