The organic substances in the contact aeration process and the activated sludge process were compared by water quality items, such as BOD and TOC, and the molecular weight distribution obtained by gel chromatography. The effluent BOD concentrations of the sedimentation/separation tank or the anaerobic filter tank were much smaller than that of raw water because of the SS removal effect, while a large difference in the D-BOD concentrations between the effluent of equalization tank and raw water was recognized. The treated water D-BOD concentrations were scarcely affected by differences of the two processes. The D-CODMn concentrations and D-TOC concentrations of treated water varied with the T-N concentrations. The ratio of the molecular weight over 1,500D of dissolved organic substances in raw water showed a rather low value of 10-15% by gel chromatography. The values of TOC/OD260nm were high, implying that organic substances in raw water have high biodegradability. Compared to the activated sludge process, the TOC removal ratio of dissolved organic substances with molecular weight over 1,500D of treated water in the contact aeration process was lower. And for both processes, the component of TOC/OD260nm>100 dramatically decreased, but the component of TOC/OD260nm≤100 showed a tiny variation. It is estimated that the differences of TOC concentrations in the treated water resulted from the nitrogen removal process.
