Description
Quantity of the litterfall was measured periodically for about 4 years in a ca.40 year-old Quercus sermta stand in the Okayama city. Total basal area of all stems≥5cm of diameter at breast height in the stand was 18.1m2· ha-1. The basal area of Q. sermta occupied 71.5% of the total. Total amount of annual Iitterfall during this period was 5.94-8.07 ton·ha-1·yr-1 and the leaf litter contributed 64.7-76.6% to the total. Annual variation in the amount of leaf fall was not great being 4.55-5.22 ton·ha-1·yr-1. Fallen leaves of Q. sermta was 2.59-3.08 ton·ha-1·yr-1 and was about 60% of the total arnount of annual leaf fall. Annual variation in the amount of branch fall was greater than that of Ieaf fall, caused by the effect of typhoons. About 80% in the amount of fallen reproductive organs was male flowers and fruits of Q. sermta. The amourlt of annual fruit fall of Q. sermta was 189-744kg·ha-1·yr-1 and fluctuated greatly among the years. Pattern of the total leaf fall within a year showed aseasonal change with a distinguished peak in autumn (November-December) and a slight peak in spring (late April-early June). Leaf fall of Q. serrata in autumn extended later in time and occurred in a short period than other species.Seasonal trend of the branch fall was not obvious, though the fall clearly increased at the time with a strong wind by typhoons.
