説明

The purpose of the study was to estimate seasonal change in the amount of ground cover composed of bracken fern on the sites of recent forest fires and to analyze the relationship between ground cover and soil loss. Every month, the amount of dead leaves and existing leaves on a plot was estimated. A rainfall simulator was used to investigate the relationship between ground cover and soil loss. As a result of observations, it was estimated that there was ground cover of about 300 g/m2 from November to April and 500 g/m2 or more during the summer. From the result of an experiment using a rainfall simulator, it is now understood that if the ground cover is 300 g/m2 or more, the amount of soil loss declines to less than 5% of the bare area. Moreover it was observed that the ground cover was distributed over the entire slope. It is now hypothesized that bracken fern colonies on forest fire sites conserve soil in the entire colony throughout the year by piling up dead leaves, and in this way, control soil erosion.
