Description
A mathematical model that describes the effects of mulch on the heat and water regimes of soil was created. The theory of simultaneous flow of heat and water was incorporated into this model, making it possible to simulate the effects of mulch in an arid region. Some numerical simulations were performedusing meteorological factors of arid regions such as in the Republic of Djibouti, Africa. The results of these simulations were as follows:(1) The effect of soil conditions on the two-dimensional distribution of soil water content under mulch and its mechanism became clear.(2) Increasing the surface albedo of the mulching material was the easiest and most effective way to control soil temperature.(3) The use of mulching material for the purpose of decreasing soil temperature was effective in conserving water in soil because of moisture movement due to temperature gradients.(4) There was no difference between the evaporation rates of unmulched and coarse-mulched surfaces under the simulated arid climatic conditions.
