Small-sized lithium-ion batteries (Wh class) have been used in our daily life, such as cellular phones, smart phones, laptop computers and various power tools. In 2010s, using large-sized lithium-ion batteries (kWh class or MWh class), Electric Vehicles (EVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), backup power supply have been commercialized. In response to this situation, the battery performances such as energy density, power density, and service life have been improved significantly. Also, a lot of effort for solving the safety problem of batteries has been put into the development of battery materials such as positive electrodes, negative ones, separators and electrolytes. However, the temperature performances and the safety level of the large-sized batteries are not enough for use in the practical EVs. Further improvement has been required for high-rate discharging performances even at a wide range of temperature (-30℃to 80℃). The development of advanced separators using nonwoven fabrics would be one of the most important task for satisfying both high performances and the safety for the large-sized lithium-ion batteries.
