The NIAS Genebank project has been implemented as a national program in Japan to collect, characterize, evaluate, rejuvenate, conserve and use plant, micro organism and animal genetic resources for food and agriculture since 1985. NIAS has functioned as a central bank of the project in cooperation with other agricultural public and private sectors. This national network on genetic resources for food and agriculture currently preserves approximately 240,000 accessions of crops germplasm and wild relatives as the base collection of about 1,450 species involving 45,000 accessions of clonal crops. Cryopreservation at super-low temperatures, below -135℃, appears to be the logical choice for the long-term storage of plant germplasm and materials. Because this method requires a minimum of space, labor, medium, and maintenance. In NIAS Genebank, a practical cryopreservation project was started in 2004 using two cryopreservation protocols that had been developed. These cryopreservation procedures contribute and advance to establishment of the National Cryo-genebank for a back up of plant germplasm according to our priority of collections to be cryopreserved.
