Description

A real-time dynamic light scattering technique has been developed, which enables one to determine the gelation-point of gelling and/or cross-linking systems without disturbing the reaction. This technique provides four types of information, i.e., the scattered intensity and the correlation function (ICF), the cluster distribution function, and the initial amplitude of ICF : each of which can be used for the gelation-point determination. This allows detection of the onset of vitrification as well. It was found that polymer gels prepared just above the gelation-point have quite different properties from well-developed gels.
