Description

Phenolic nano-composite was easily prepared from nano size's boehmite alumina and novolak by melt blending. The causes of such easy blending were guessed as follows : boehmite alumina kept large positive zeta-potential at about pH5 on the one hand, the pH value of which was almost same as the acidity of novolak on the other hand; under such conditions the hydroxyl groups of boehmite alumina and novolak would strongly interact with one another, with the aid of good dispersion of nano-size boehmite alumina particles into novolak by repulsive forces. The interaction of hydroxyl groups from boehmite alumina and novolak were confirmed to be condensation reaction. So, the resulting nano-composite formed an organic-inorganic hybrid. The flexural strength of this hybrid was down step by step according to the amount of boehmite alumina. The nano-composite, however, could improve its flexural strength with a sudden rise by the modification of adding μm-sized alumina..
