We successfully fabricated a multilayer structure consisting of a semiconductor-magnetic hybrid material GaAs:MnAs and GaAs / AlAs distributed Bragg reflectors, which is a one-dimensional semiconductor-based magneto-photonic crystal. Significant enhancement of magneto-optical effect was demonstrated around 980 nm at room temperature and under a relatively low field of 0.1-0.2 T. Magneto-optical spectra of this multilayer system were well explained by theoretical calculations. The mechanism for enhancement of magneto-optical effect and the conditions required for application to optical isolators are discussed. Some approaches toward higher magneto-optical performance were investigated. Since our material system is composed of all semiconductor-based materials, our results potentially lead to a new class of magneto-optical devices integrated with III-V based optoelectronics.
