ISOとITU-Tに共通の新たな2値画像符号化標準JBIG2が誕生した.新標準は, パターンマッチング技術の利用により, テキスト画像のビジュアリロスレス圧縮で従来標準の数倍の圧縮性能を有し, ロスレス圧縮やハーフトーン画像圧縮でも従来標準を大きく凌駕する.本稿では2値画像符号化の歴史にもふれつつ, JBIG, JBIG2の最新動向を紹介する.
