抄録

Three-dimensional (3D) video is attracting a lot of attention as a new multimedia representation method.It comprises a sequence of 3D models (frames)that form a sequence using vertices,connectivity,and attribute components.Among these components,vertices need a large storage space.In conventional 2D video compression algorithms,motion compensation (MC),which uses a block matching algorithm,is frequently used to reduce the redundancy between consecutive frames.However,such a technology for 3D video has not yet been developed.We have extended the block matching algorithm to reduce the redundancy in the geometry information of the 3D video by extending the idea of 2D block matching to the 3D space.In our extended block matching algorithm,a cubic block is used as a matching unit,and MC is performed efficiently by matching the mean normal vectors of these blocks.Experiments showed that our matching crietrion were sub-optimal.The residual information is transformed by discrete cosine transform (DCT) and uniformly quantized.Then entropy encoding is applied to the quantized DCT coefficients.The extracted motion vectors are also entropy encoded.Experiments showed that the amount of 3D video data was reduced from 9 to 20%.
