The present writer aims to make an outline of the growth of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. from 1802 to 1921 as well as to examine the correlation between the expansion of the company and the development of its administrative organization. By 1902 the du Pont Co. had obtained control over the greater part of American explosives industry through the Gunpowder Trade Association and by holding stocks of many other powder companies. It remainied, however, a family enterprise, in which all administrative functions were concentrated exclusively upon they president, the head of the family. Consequently there could be no definite administrative organization to be called as such. Since the company began to transform many powder companies under its control into a consolidated and integrated enterprise in 1902, a systematic and efficient administration fit for the newly enlarged enterprise was badly needed. It was to meet this need that the centralized and functionally departmentalized structure was created. The business of the du Pont Co. had been strikingly extended during World War I. The huge expansion presented, in consequence, the serious problem of utilizing excess capacity and personnel after the war. The stress of circumstances forced the du Pont Co. to decide to develop new product lines, and the diversification of business, in turn, called inevitably for a refashioning of the administrative organization. It was in this way that, after some trials and errors, the du Pont Co. had finally created the decentralized, multidivisional organization in 1921.
