Abstract

An intensive interview survey was conducted on 104 farm households in 30 agricultural hamlets of 7 municipalities in Awa Region, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The relationships between collective activities related to "local production for local consumption" and social capitals were statistically analyzed. Major findings are as follows. First, community level structural social capital, exemplified by rural-based local social groups, contributes not only to economic activities such as direct marketing and heightening the added value on local farm products, but also to a wider range of collective activities, e.g. environmentally friendly farming practices, urban-rural exchange programs and settlement of communal agreement for regional resource management. Second, household level structural social capitals positively affect on participation in farmers markets. While those who have close connection with community members are found to be active in pick-your-own fruit garden business. Third, household level cognitive social capitals have no significant effect on "local production for local consumption" activities.
