Abstract
The linkage between Pusan and Fukuoka are examined as a case study to discuss the status of Fukuoka in international urban system. The author conducted interviews with 62firms in Pusan that export food (38firms) and clothes (24firms) to Japan, and the data were analyzed in terms of three aspects of export activities: contract, business travel, and shipment. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The patterns of export activities of the studied firms in Pusan are classified into five types. Different patterns of linkage are identified between the three aspects. 2. The linkage between Pusan and Fukuoka is stronger in business travel and shipment than in contract in comparison with the linkage with Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. 3. The linkage between Pusan and Fukuoka is stronger in the food-exporting firms than the clothes-exporting firms, and stronger in direct export activities than in indirect export activities, in comparison with the linkages with Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
