Description

This paper attempts to postulate a set of rules which are to predict phonetic patterns of a dialect of Taegu Korean in the framework of generative phonology.
The scope of the paper is confined to the accent of nouns including compounds with two constituents, and the conjugation and accentuation of verbs and adjectives.
Some of the main points are described as follows:
(1) It is shown that six items of difficulties occur if the treatment of this dialect is based on the view that the bearer of an abstract accent is a mora rather than a syllable, and that if the bearer of accent is assumed to be a syllable rather than a mora, those difficulties can be solved.
(2) A set of rules which apply at the latest stage of the derivation are introduced to assign actual prosodic patterns.
(3) The same set of rules predict accentuation of nouns with an enclitic, of denominal compound nouns, and of attributive forms of verbs and adjectives followed by a noun.
(4) The structure of certain kinds of compounds can be specified through phonological rules postulated in this paper.
(5) Almost all the complicated conjugated forms, considering accent, can be derived by applying a set of ordered phonological rules to a single underlying stem and with affixes.
(6) All the rules given in this paper are ordered rules.
