Abstract
A 3-dimensional model obtained by a laser scanner is typically an unstructured triangular mesh with highly detailed data so that remeshing is desirable for various applications. Among diverse remeshing techniques, anisotropic polygonal remeshing based on curvature lines is one of the most convincing methods. This paper proposes a quad-dominant remeshing method by using strong features and closed curvature lines of a 3D surface in order to generate more regular mesh structure than conventional methods. The proposed method significantly improves the instability of conventional traces of curvature lines by introducing possible swapping of principal directions. A new filtering technique is devised for propagating principal directions from anisotropic regions to isotropic ones. The proposed method also introduces a robust estimator of irregular points on the 3D surface and a detection scheme for closed curvature lines such as circumferences of a generalized cylinder. Results of our remeshing method for six objects show smaller number of irregular points and more reliable and effective quad-dominant meshes than those of conventional methods.
