Abstract
<p>Junior high school students reconstructed sedimentary environments based on specially designed facies models. The models depict the characteristic features of six sedimentary environments―alluvial fans, meandering rivers, lakes and marshes, estuaries, coastal zones, and submarine fans―accompanied by short sentences, the meaning of which are easy to understand by junior high school students. Using these models during a geological field observation, 40% of all students correctly identified the sedimentary environment. However, 60% of the students could not find the characteristic features of the strata. The results suggest that the ability of students to observe geological features correctly in the field should be improved to enhance the effectiveness of using the models.</p>
