説明

Urban areas are composed of various establishments and government offices, which are working places and residences of the inhabitants. The areal structure of these facilities and houses differs in accordance with the size or character of cities.
In this paper, the author investigated the difference of areal structure of working population in several cities with different sizes. Foiling cities in Tohoku district were selected ; Sendai, Morioka, Yonezawa and Furukawa. The population of these cities in 1965 ranged from 481, 000 to 53, 000. For the survey, the rural area was excluded from the administrative area of each city, and the survey area was divided into a number of small unit areas. Concerning these unit areas, by the daytime working population the author refers to the number of working population with their working places within the areas. The employed population, on the other hand, means all the people with occupations living in the area. The source of data of the former is Establishment Census for the year 1966, and that of the latter is Population Census for the year 1965.
The results are summarised as follows ;
(1) The figures of the density of the daytime working population and the employed population show different tendencies in accordance with the population size of the cities.
(2) As to the distribution of the ratio values of the daytime working population to the employed population, and the correlation of these ratio values with the character of unit areas, there are some differences among the cities under survey. In manfuacturing cities like Kooriyama and Yonezawa, there is a remarkable correlation.
(3) The industrial structure of the daytime working population within the delimited area, in which working population is concentrated, shows that the population engaged in manufacturing industry is great in number in manufacturing cities. However, in this case the difference due to the size of the city is not so remarkable.
