Description

I stayed at Dhorpatan, about 40km southwest of Dhaulagiri in central Nepal, for about 2 weeks in October 1981, During that period 57 species of birds were collected or observed. These 57 species show clearly the west Himalayan nature of the Dhorpatan avifauna, reflecting the conifer-dominant habitat of the area. Many of the specimens collected were in heavy postnuptial or postjuvenile molt. It is postulated that the birds breeding at and above 3, 500m at Dhorpatan have nestlings in late August, possibly because snow and cold weather delay their breeding until July. My specimens of Parus melanolophus do not seem to provide a support to its hybridization with P. ater, but more evidence is needed to establish the taxonomic status of melanolophus in central Nepal.
