This paper is written on the examination of how comprehension of a story can be increased by utilizing the “cut image reading method” when reading a novel.

This technique is an original methodology that was invented by a writer in 2001. The “cut image reading method” is used when reading a novel as follows: a reader imagines the outline of a story as a series of pictures like a comic or a picture book, and then divides the story into units that represent the series of pictures in his/her mind. After that, the reader combines the units of the story to make less units. In this process, the reader can comprehend the construction of the whole story. Furthermore, if this method is introduced to a group of readers, they can deepen their comprehension of the story through discussion of what the most impressive or important picture is in each individuals mind and discuss the differences and reasons behind their individual choices as a group.

The writer has tested his methodology and examined how the “cut image reading method” promotes comprehension when reading a novel.

This test was conducted with university students. They were divided into two groups at random: one group read a novel using the “cut image reading method” and the other group read a novel using the paragraph-dividing method which is a commonly used skill when reading a novel. The group using the “cut image reading method” read a novel and divided the story into units representing their “cut images”, while the paragraph-dividing group read the same novel and they divided the story their instructed way. Fifty days later, the readers of the both groups retold the story.

As a whole, the “cut image reading method” group retold the story more concretely than the paragraph-dividing group. The differences between the two groups when retelling the story could be seen in the following instances: the scene where the problem that the main character of the story is facing becomes serious, the highlight of the story when the problem has been solved, and the ending of the story that brings the conclusion and of a feeling of happiness to the readers.

Therefore, the results of the test tell us that the “cut image reading method” assists readers to comprehend the construction of the whole story more efficiently and helps them to identify with the character of a story.
