Description
A flock of Ross's Gull (Larus roseus) consisting of 4 adults and 3 immatures was observed and photographed at the harbor of Shari, northeastern Hokkaido, on 14 -15 January 1974. The weather of those two days was snowy and windy with the temperature at -7°C. The Ross's gulls spent most of their time on the sea and around the harbor, feeding on garbage from the water. Their call is like that of the Kittiwake (Larus tridactylus) and was heard frequently while they were feeding and flying.<br>The adult winter and immature plumages that the author observed are described. This is the first record of occurrence of the Ross's Gull in Japan.
